HL7 Version 2 Messaging

The workhorse of hospital interfaces — message structure, delimiters, segments (MSH, PID, PV1, ORC, OBR, OBX), message types (ADT, ORM, ORU, SIU, DFT), ACKs and interface engines.

Why HL7 v2 still matters

Slide 1 / 5

HL7 Version 2 (from the late 1980s) is still the most widely used interface standard inside hospitals. Nearly every ADT feed, lab order, lab result and charge between the EHR and other systems is an HL7 v2 message.

Messages are plain text: segments on separate lines, fields separated by delimiters. Interface analysts read them every day to troubleshoot.
