FHIR, APIs & SMART on FHIR

Modern interoperability with HL7 FHIR — resources, RESTful APIs, JSON, search, US Core profiles, SMART on FHIR apps, CDS Hooks, bulk data and patient access APIs.

What FHIR is

Slide 1 / 5

FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources, pronounced 'fire') is HL7's modern standard. It uses web technology developers already know: • Data is organized as 'resources' (Patient, Encounter, Observation, Condition, MedicationRequest, AllergyIntolerance…). • Resources are exchanged as JSON (or XML) over RESTful HTTP APIs. • Release 4 (R4) is the widely adopted version; US Core profiles define how U.S. systems use it. • Certified EHRs must offer standardized FHIR APIs for patient and population access.
