Anesthesia Coding

Anesthesia codes and crosswalks, the base + time + modifying units formula, physical status modifiers, qualifying circumstances and medical direction modifiers.

How anesthesia is coded

Slide 1 / 5

Anesthesia services use CPT 00100–01999, organized by body area (head, neck, thorax, spine, upper abdomen, lower abdomen, perineum, pelvis, upper leg, knee, lower leg, shoulder, elbow, forearm, radiological procedures, burn, obstetric, other).

Coders usually start from the SURGICAL CPT code and use a crosswalk (e.g. the ASA Crosswalk) to find the matching anesthesia code. Example: laparoscopic cholecystectomy (47562) → 00790 (anesthesia for intraperitoneal procedures in the upper abdomen including laparoscopy).
