Metadata & the Head Element

The DOCTYPE, the html lang attribute, and what belongs in <head>: title, charset, viewport, description, and links.

What is metadata?

Slide 1 / 5

Metadata is data about the page rather than content on the page. Visitors don't see most of it in the page itself, but browsers, search engines, and social networks rely on it.

It lives in the <head> element, which comes before <body>. The head tells the browser how to read the file, what to call the tab, how to size the page on phones, which stylesheets to load, and how to describe the page in search results.
