Block-level vs inline elements, div and span, and the rules for nesting them.

Block-level vs. inline

Slide 1 / 5

Every element displays as either block-level or inline by default.

Block-level elements start on a new line and stretch the full width available β€” headings, paragraphs, lists, sections.

Inline elements sit within a line of text and are only as wide as their content β€” links, <strong>, <em>, <img>, <span>.

This default affects layout: two paragraphs stack vertically; two links sit side by side.
