Representing Health Data

Structured vs unstructured data, data types, the clinical data model (entity–attribute–value, observations), metadata and provenance, and data quality by design.

Forms of health data

Slide 1 / 5

• Structured — fixed fields with defined values (BP 142/88; code E11.9). • Semi-structured — templates with free-text parts; JSON/XML documents. • Unstructured — narrative notes, reports, images, audio, waveforms. An estimated large share of clinical information lives in narrative text — which is why NLP and AI matter so much in informatics.
