Tags & Releases

Lightweight and annotated tags, semantic versioning, pushing tags, and GitHub releases.

What are tags?

Slide 1 / 5

A tag is a permanent, human-friendly name for a specific commit β€” typically a release: v1.0.0, v2.3.1.

Unlike a branch, a tag doesn't move when new commits are added. It always marks exactly the code that shipped in that version, so you can check it out, compare it, or rebuild it years later.
