Staging & Committing

Starting a repository, tracking new files, git status, staging, and writing good commits.

Starting a repository

Slide 1 / 5

mkdir website cd website git init

git init creates the hidden .git folder where Git keeps the whole history. Everything in the folder is now part of the repository, but Git doesn't track any file until you tell it to.

To start from an existing project online instead, use git clone <url> β€” that copies the whole repository, history included.
