The parts of a function

Slide 1 / 5

A function is a predefined formula. It has a name followed by arguments in parentheses: =SUM(B2:B10). A colon creates a range, and commas separate arguments: =SUM(B2:B10, D2:D10, 100).

While you type, Excel shows a ScreenTip with the function's arguments; optional ones appear in [brackets].

Find functions in the Formulas tab's Function Library, or click the fx button next to the Formula Bar to open Insert Function, which explains every argument as you fill it in.
