Your First SQL Queries

Relational tables, SELECT, WHERE, ORDER BY and LIMIT on a patient table — and how analysts read a data dictionary before querying.

Why SQL

Slide 1 / 5

Healthcare data lives in relational databases: EHR reporting databases (e.g. Epic Clarity/Caboodle), claims warehouses, registries. SQL (Structured Query Language) is how analysts ask those databases questions. • It handles millions of rows easily. • Queries are repeatable and documented. • Almost every healthcare analyst job requires it. We'll use SQLite syntax; the concepts transfer to SQL Server, Oracle, Snowflake and others.
