What is an ETL Pipeline?

Extract, transform, load β€” what data pipelines do, who builds them, and the World Bank data used in this course.

ETL: Extract, Transform, Load

Slide 1 / 5

Almost no data arrives ready to use. It's scattered across files, databases, and web services, in different formats, with missing values and inconsistent names.

An ETL pipeline moves data from where it lives to where it's useful, in three stages:

β€’ Extract β€” read raw data from its sources. β€’ Transform β€” clean, combine, and reshape it. β€’ Load β€” write the result to a destination such as a database.

A pipeline is code, so it can run again tomorrow on fresh data with no manual steps.
