Introduction to C++

What C++ is and where it's used, the structure of a program, printing with cout, reading with cin, namespaces, and comments.

What C++ is

Slide 1 / 5

C++ was created by Bjarne Stroustrup in 1985 as "C with classes". It keeps C's speed and low-level control, and adds classes, templates, a large standard library, and safer tools for managing memory.

C++ powers performance-critical software: • game engines (Unreal Engine) and graphics, • browsers (Chrome, Firefox), databases, and compilers, • trading systems, robotics, and embedded devices, • desktop apps such as Adobe and Microsoft Office tools.

Modern C++ (C++11 and later) is much friendlier than its reputation — this course uses C++17.
